What is yoga?
Yoga is a practice of physical postures and breathing exercises. Unlike other forms of exercise yoga benefits both the mind and body. For the body yoga creates strength, flexibility and energy. Yoga postures or asanas help to release tension from tight muscles. Additionally yoga promotes cleansing of impurities in the body, thus creating more physical energy and lightness. For the mind yoga improves mental clarity, increases concentration and calms overactive thoughts. We are able to see these mental benefits of yoga because it incorporates breathing exercises which decrease stress and anxiety.
Beginner Classes
Intro to Yoga Series: This class is for people who have never done yoga before. In this class you will learn how to perform the basic poses in a safe and effective way. This is an open environment where you can ask questions to better your understanding of yoga. Cost: $70/4 weeks. Single Class = $20.
Basics (Yoga Rocks Level I): Basic yoga postures are learned and practiced along with breathwork and relaxation. Suitable for beginners.
ONE-ON-ONE PRIVATE YOGA TRAINING
While there are many benefits to be gained from attending group yoga classes, an ideal way for many people to learn yoga and develop a personal practice for their individual needs is through one-on-one yoga sessions.
In a One-on-One Private Yoga Training Session, your individual needs will be discussed and assessed through a 30-minute trial session. From this, an individual practice of postures and breathing will be developed and taught; one that is appropriate for your particular needs. Individual needs to be considered might include general health, specific injuries or conditions, age, strength, flexibility, and life circumstances.
Some of the reasons to consider private yoga training:
One-on-One Yoga Training may also include two or three people. A great way to learn with a partner or friend!

What to Bring to Your Yoga Class
1. If you have a yoga mat of your own we recommend you bring your own mat. We have mats available for you to borrow for your first class but most people feel it is more comfortable and sanitary to have their own personal mat since postures are practiced both seated and lying down.
2. A bottle of water is a good idea to bring as yoga is a physical practice and water can help keep the body cool.
3. Wear comfortable clothing. Any type of stretch pants or drawstring pants will be perfect. We do suggest that you avoid wearing too loose fitting clothes as they can get in the way of certain poses or make you feel heavy. If you tend to get cold easily we recommend a lighter weight long sleeve shirt as opposed to a sweatshirt.
4. Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. We suggest not eating 2 hours prior to a yoga practice as some of the postures compress the abdomen. If you must eat before class try something light like a piece of fruit or a yogurt.
5. Come to class with an open mind and ready to learn a new skill to help you improve your life, increase flexibility and strength and create more balance in your life.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Can I do yoga if I am inflexible?
A: Of course you can do yoga if you are not flexible! In fact this is a major reason why you should do yoga. As we age our muscles naturally tighten up. Yoga can be a great help to loosen and ease muscle tension already in the body as well as help put off the muscle tension bought on by aging.
2. I have had many injuries will yoga irritate past injuries?
A: All yoga poses can be modified for specific conditions. When we suffer from an injury, the injury not only affects the muscles involved, but the muscles around the area are affected as well. Yoga can help to improve the muscle function in these areas as well as bring joints back into alignment.
3. How do I pay for classes?
A: We have many different payment options. Our best payment option is the monthly auto renew program for $125 per month. We also have various class passes and memberships.
4. Will yoga make me build up a sweat?
A: As mentioned before there are many different types of yoga offered at Yoga Rocks. If you are looking for a more physical form of yoga we recommend the Yoga Rocks Vinyasa Flow classes (Level II), which build heat in the body. If you just want yoga to be a relaxing form of stretching then we suggest the Yoga Rocks Basics classes where your body temperature will stay relatively cooler. Remember, this is a physical exercise so it is good to sweat a little bit everyday to cleanse and renew the body systems.
5. Can yoga help me with back pain?
A: YES! Yoga is one of the best solutions to an achy or painful back. The postures teach us how to correct postural habits which put stress on the spine. Once we begin to become aware of our habits we see an improvement in how our back feels. Additionally the postures stretch and strengthen the muscles along the spine in a way that no other form of exercise can.
6. Can I practice yoga if I am pregnant?
A: Yoga is a wonderful way to bond with your baby while you are pregnant. At Yoga Rocks we offer prenatal yoga classes just for women who are expecting. If you schedule doesn't work with our prenatal class and you have had prior yoga experience it is perfectly safe to join our basics classes. All of our teachers are trained in how to modify specific poses for women who are pregnant. You will also receive a complimentary prenatal guidelines sheet to help make the most out of your prenatal yoga practice.
How to avoid injury in your yoga class
Although yoga is a low impact form of exercise, we still need to be mindful about what we are doing. Most injuries in yoga come from trying to do too much. Yoga is a practice that is done on a regular basis, so it is important to be patient with your progress and let it be a slow process done with love and respect for yourself and your body.
1. Don't push yourself far into a stretch. If you are a beginner some of the poses may explore physical tension but pushing yourself further into a pose will not help release the tension. The release comes from giving into the the pose at the point that is right for your personal body.
2. Use your breath to guide you through all physical postures. Listen to your breath during the poses if it suddenly becomes hard to breath then you may be pushing yourself too far, back off and come to a place in the pose that allows you to breathe slowly and evenly.
3. Tell your doctor that you are starting to practice yoga especially if you have any medical conditions or concerns.
4. Tell your teacher if you have any injuries or conditions. All of our teachers are fully trained and will be able to tell you what poses you should avoid based on your conditions or injuries.
5. Modify poses when necessary. If the teacher suggests a modification it is because he/she feels it is the safest way for you to perform the pose.
Top 10 Yoga Class Tips
1. Arrive 5-10 minutes prior to class. Yoga is meant to promote relaxation and rushing into class right at the start will not only create stress for yourself, but for your fellow yogi's as well.
2. Avoid throwing your mat down on the floor, it makes a loud noise and can startled others in the room.
3. Breathe quietly and calmly, avoid grunting or groaning this is not a calming type of breath.
4. TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF. There is nothing worse then being totally focused and present and then getting interrupted with the sound of a cell phone. It will totally distract you and take away from the mental benefits of yoga.
5. Ask questions if you are unsure about how to do a pose or if something doesn't feel right. Chances are others in the class are wondering the same thing.
6. Take your socks off. The socks don't grip the mat as well as your barefeet so to feel more comfortable in the poses practice with no socks.
7. Be patient. Yoga is meant to be done regularly over a long length of time. Don't be in a rush for results or to progress in the poses. Good things come to those who wait!
8. Take the few minutes before class to sit quietly and bring your mind into focus. Loud chatter with yoga mates will only make it more difficult to get into the zone once class starts.
9. Try not to look around the and compare yourself to others. This is your time to yourself, let it be a nurturing enjoyable time not a time to judge yourself or others.
10. Smile! When you are in a pose that challenges you or makes you face tension, smile and remember that you are doing something really amazing for yourself and those close to you in your daily life. You don't have to hold the pose forever!
